Chugiak Eagle River Nordic Ski Club

Eagle River Junior Nordic Family Ski Program

Are you looking for a fun activity the entire family can enjoy together?  Get off the sidelines, beat the winter blues, get some exercise and make new friends when you join the Eagle River Junior Nordic Family Ski Program!

We are an all-volunteer parent-led, family-oriented co-op for ages 4-14, with a focus on preschool and elementary-aged skiers.  We rely on our adults to strap on skis and join the kiddos, at least some of the time.

Sessions are M/W or T/Th. Time is 6:45 to 8:00 pm.

Our highly popular program is a bit unique in the youth ski world.  We subscribe to the Norwegian system of teaching the love of skiing through fun on skis rather than skills and drills, particularly at the younger levels.  A typical 6-year old session might include a game of wolves and caribou, a short ski, the limbo, another short ski, some red-light green-light and maybe some ski time playing on the big hill.
Want to coach but don't know how?  We will train you for free!  A few of our parent coaches are Nordic ski racers and some are experienced recreational skiers but, the majority are learning to ski alongside their kids...and you can too!
Our goal is to instill a love of Nordic skiing as an activity for the entire family, to build a strong ski community in the Chugiak-Eagle River area, and to enjoy our beautiful Alaskan winters!

Older middle school and high school athletes who are looking for more training, skill development, and race support are encouraged to connect with Alaska Nordic Racing which provides year-round ski training in the Chugiak - Eagle River area.  Adult lessons, both for beginners and accomplished skiers, are offered through Alaska Nordic Masters.

1. Go to Membership and either join or renew your family membership. (Renewing members that are logged in can just click the renewal box at the lower right of the screen.  Be sure to enter in everyone's name who may be joining us on the trails, this includes adults and tag-along children, not just Junior Nordic skiers.)

2. After you are logged in with a membership, go to Event Sign-Up and choose Junior Nordic.  (This is where you choose the nights that you want your kids to ski, and which group they should be in.)

note: The Event Sign-Up page is also where you sign up to be a coach or parent helper.

Junior Nordic Sign-Up Information

The Eagle River Junior Nordic Family Ski Program is only open to Chugiak-Eagle River Nordic Ski Club members.  This ensures that youth and parent volunteers are covered by liability insurance required by the city to use the Beach Lake chalet and trails.

** You must log in with a Family Membership to sign up **  Your must renew or join to see the Junior Nordic "Event" Sign-ups. (Just joining at the family level does not automatically sign you up for Junior Nordic, you still have to sign each skier up under Events.)

Coaches, please register for the "Junior Nordic Coaching" event first to get your first kid 1/2 price discount registration code !

How can we offer a youth program for so little?  Well, we don't pay anyone.  We rely on you, the parents, and high school volunteers to run the program.

What does my money go towards?  We offer free training and a slick coach hat to our coaches, provide a end-of-the-year pizza party for the youth, run this website, cover our volunteers with liability insurance, pay trail fees, put on community races, help develop and maintain ski trails, you name it!

Which days should I sign up for MW or TTh?  Because we share the trails with the adult Alaska Nordic Master's group on Tuesday-Thursday those days tend to be quite crowded.  We recommend signing up for the Monday-Wednesday if possible.

Do we have Junior Nordic on holidays or in bad weather?  No. The general rule is that we ski when Anchorage schools are in session.  We do ski on school half-days.  We do not ski if we expect temperatures to be below zero or if there are dangerous icy, rocky or windy conditions.  Call the ERJN hotline 689-7661 every night to confirm that we are skiing, it is usually updated by 5:15 pm.

Can I come just once a week?  Because of school holidays, family commitments and bad weather we highly recommend that you plan on attending two sessions a week and skip the occasional session for other commitments.  It's not fun for your kid to fall behind the group in skills and stamina. We encourage parents to schedule their children for success!

Which Junior Nordic Group /Session Should My Child be in?

Age groups are guidelines, not absolutes. More important is to match your child's emotional maturity and physical stamina with the rest of the group so they fit well and enjoy skiing! We will move children around the first few weeks to the group that suits them best.  If your child is between groups, put them in the easier group and we can always bump them up.

POLAR CUBS: 4-5 year olds, young beginners. No poles. Parents MUST ski with their child. Focus on balance, glide and fun on skis.

WHITE / WHITE ZOOMERS: ages 6-8 and up: beginners and former Polar Cubs practice classic technique both without and with poles. Two year focus on balance, stride and hills.  These group meet together as the white group and split up based on skills and speed and stamina.

BLUE / BLUE EXTRA: ages 7-9 and up: advanced beginner skiers who are comfortable with balance, hills, and somewhat longer distances. The blue group learns classic and skate techniques.  (Kids should be able to glide on one ski using classic technique to start blue group.)

PURPLE GROUP: ages 9-11 and up: year olds: intermediate and recreational skiers who are comfortable in classic and skate basics. We work on improving speed, stamina and skills. (Kids should be competent in one skate technique to start purple group)

COMPETITION GROUP: Middle school and competetive upper elementary skiers who are confident with basic classic and skate techniques looking to train for races. Tuesday-Thursday only.
